9 2-3-4-5-6 NY Dealers Protective Assn., Julian Hawthorne Co. 30 Based in NY, this company was one of the early credit protection agencies. This pattern is also found on a Julian Hawthorne cover dated 1910??? Most likely an early demonstration machine. I suspect the majority of the known used singles were from those Hawthorne mailings.

9 2-4-5-6-8 NY Austin Nichols Co. 174 Austin Nichols Co. was a NYC grocery wholesaler. A piece with date 1/11/190 is reported but can't confirm use by Austin Nichols. An Austin Nichols cover dated 8/30/1911 is the latest known from NYC. All other users had discontinued usage earlier. Blind perfins are known both on holes #1 and #9 not at the same time. This control pattern has been reported on the 1912 series. Examination suggests that was a broken pin pattern from another user.

9 2-5-7-8-9 NY David Williams Co. and related publications 45 Thought to be a broken pin version of David Williams original pattern 2-5. Examination of these stamps reveals blind perforations where the 7,8 & 9 holes were supposed to be punched. Apparently this die was loose and sometimes the holes would be left blind and other times they would not show a punch at all. This appears to have started happening April 1910.
9 3-4-6-7-8 CHI Babson Brothers and affiliated vendors 118 This pattern is the 4th broken pin version of Babson's original 37 pattern. Pattern 37 last known 2/26/1911. Pattern 378 dated 3/3/1911. Pattern 3678 cancel 3/28/1911. Final pattern 34678 dated 4/7/1911. Short window of opportunity to produce the 378 and 3678 patterns account for their scarcity. Babson Brothers was the Midwest distributor for Edison Phonographs. They received an entire trainload of product. Twenty Seven boxcars containing over 8000 phonographs, 8000 horns, 250,000 records and tons of advertising literature were received. They actually opened a brick and mortar store, separate from their main mail order business in Chicago.

9 4-5-6-8-9 NY U. T. Hungerford Brass & Copper Co. 230 As the name suggests, a supplier of metal rod and pipe.
9 2-3-4-5-6-9 NY John Wanamaker Co. 2 Previously unknown user, just discovered, 12/19/2016, on a John Wanamaker cover dated 12/24/1909. The cover has a clear perfin in the #8 position with blind perfins at #1 and #7 making it a 234569 pattern. The early usage suggests this was most likely a demonstrator machine. By early 1910 Wanamaker purchased a Schermack Mailing Machine with control pattern 5689.
9 2-4-5-6-7-9 NY Julian Hawthorne Co. 1 Sold in Perfins Club auction 9/1973 Some evidence must exist to link this pattern to Hawthorne. I am not aware of it.
