John Wanamaker Co. was a department store founded in Philadelphia. When they expanded to NY they acquired a Schermack machine with control perforation die. The Philadelphia store used a Schermack without control marks.John Wanamaker raised large political doanations for Benjamin Harrison. When he was elected President, he appointed John Wanamaker his Post Master General. Some early (1909) covers are reported on Review Of Review corner cards. Best guess is that this was demonstration machine that was later sold to Wanamaker.

This pattern was purchased recently at auction. Turns out on examination there were 3 blind perfs in the 3rd tier. Stamp was actually a 2-5-7-8-9 with blind perfs. Most likely this pattern never truly existed and had been previously misreported.

Julian Hawthorne Co. and related publications

Julian Hawthorne was the son of famous author Nathaniel Hawthorne. An author in his own right, he and a friend used the family name to sell stock in Canadian silver mines. The mines turned out to be non-existent. As a result both he and his partner served time in prison for mail fraud. Stamps with this pattern 1-3-5-7-9 were used to perpetrate this mail fraud. If you’d like to learn more about this, read my article in the The United States Specialist, November, 2017.
