Issued on July 1, 1859, the 17¢ (8d stg) blue Jacques Cartier stamp is based upon a François Riss portrait painting. It was printed by American Bank Note Company (New York) and is perforated 11.75, 12 x 11.75, 12. It’s usage was meant to pay the letter rate to the United Kingdom and as such only about 6000 sheets were ever printed. Because of the low usage, only one plate exists and it is believed that it was never reworked or repaired. Sheets contained 100 stamps arranged in 10 rows with 10 columns; positions are numbered 1 through 100 starting with the upper left stamp.
