Postage Stamps of the People’s Republic of ChinaCompiled by the China Philatelic CompanyForeign Language Press, Peking, 1959Table of contents: A Short History of Chinese Stamps (Chiang Teh), A Miniature Sheet (Affixed), A Selection of Stamps of the Chinese People’s Republic (In full colour), Catalogue of Chinese People’s Republic Stamps (October 1949 - March 1959) (sepia tones), and Blank Pages for Mounting New Stamps (10).

Despite only a modest one hundred pages, this is a very interesting and informative volume. This is particularly true given its 1959 publication date, a time when detailed information regarding PRC issues was limited.

The fifteen-page “A Short History of Chinese Stamps” lives up to its title, starting with the 8th Century post stages. Examples from each period of Chinese postal history are included as marginal illustrations. Examples from the Period of the People’s Revolutionary War (1928 -1949) include stamps not often included in Western philatelic catalogues.

The approximate 70-page “Catalogue” includes details re catalogue number (i.e., numbering system which appears at the bottom left of early PRC issues), denomination, colour, printing (method), perforation, and date of issue.
Includes both color and black/white illustrations, paginated. Hardcover, 7 1/2 x 10 1/2-inch100
Handbook of Carpatho-Ukrainian PhilatelyJay Carrigan and Ingert KuzychUkrainian Philatelic Resources, Springfield VA. 2005Published as a special edition of the Ukrainian Philatelist, No.94. Contents includes Introduction, three articles, and stamp catalogue.

Once called Ruthenia, today the region is the Ukraine’s Western-most oblast (province) of Zakarpattia. The two authors are well known to collectors of Ukrainian and central European philatelic material. According to the Introduction, the Handbook “covers the postal issues of Carpathia-Ukraine which were released prior to, and again towards the close of, the Second World War.” At the time of the Handbook’s publication, the stamps of Carpathia-Ukraine were not included in the popular Scott catalogue.

Article 1: An Introduction to the Stamps of the Carpathia-Ukraine, 1939 - 1945. Jointly authored. The first article is “an introduction to the subject, covering the 1939 National Assembly issue that was valid for only two days, the 1945 overprints, and the three sets of definitive issues also from 1945.”

This is followed by a 24-page catalogue listing every issue released of the 1939 and 1945 issues. (Carrigan)

The second article deals with postal stationery from the same periods. Jointly written.

Third article focuses on the “often-ignored postal release from the World War II era— the Kolomyia provisional postcards of 1941.” (Kuzych)

Co-author Carrigan died at age 76 in August 2015. In addition to being a prolific philatelic author, he was also a decorated exhibitor earning several gold medals including his ten frames of Carpathia-Ukraine 1944-45 issues.
